2D to 3D CAD Conversion: A Practical Checklist Before You Start
Before converting legacy 2D drawings into 3D models, work through this checklist — drawing quality, missing dimensions, revision status and what the model is for.
Legacy 2D drawings — especially decades-old ones — rarely convert cleanly into 3D without some upfront decisions. Before starting a 2D-to-3D conversion job, it’s worth checking:
- Are the drawings dimensionally complete? Missing dimensions on an old drawing mean assumptions have to be made — flag anything ambiguous before modelling starts, not after.
- Which CAD platform is the 3D model for? SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and Creo all handle feature history differently — say up front which software (and version) needs to open the final file.
- Do you need parametric or “dumb” geometry? Parametric models (editable features, driven by dimensions) cost more time than a static solid — but they’re the only option if the part will be modified later.
- Should the model match the drawing exactly, or should known errors be corrected? Old drawings sometimes encode a mistake that was fixed on the shop floor but never updated on paper. Decide in advance whether the 3D model should match the drawing or the as-built part.
- Is there an assembly context? A single part converted in isolation can end up with mating faces that don’t actually fit its assembly — if the part belongs to an assembly, say so.
Getting these five answers before conversion starts avoids the most common rework request we get: “the model doesn’t match how the part is actually built.”

The checklist itself
Before the first feature is drawn, work through these. Each one is something that has derailed a conversion we have been asked to rescue.
- ✓ Is this the latest revision, and can someone confirm it?
- ✓ Are all three views present, and do they agree with each other?
- ✓ Are there dimensions missing that only the shop floor currently knows?
- ✓ Have changes been pencilled on a print but never drawn up?
- ✓ Does a physical sample exist to check the model against?
- ✓ What is the model actually for — CNC, simulation, rendering or a supplier?
- ✓ Which CAD platform and file version does it need to open in?
Why the last two questions change the price
What the model is for decides how it should be built. A model for rendering needs to look right and nothing more. A model for CNC needs correct geometry but not necessarily a tidy feature tree. A model that will be edited for years needs a deliberate, well-ordered tree with sensible sketch planes — which takes longer to build and is worth every extra hour.
Deciding this up front is cheaper than discovering it later, because rebuilding a model to be editable is close to starting again.
What slows a conversion down
Almost never the modelling. It is waiting for answers — a missing dimension nobody can confirm, two views that contradict each other, a revision history that stopped being maintained years ago. Conversions run fastest when one person on the client side has authority to make a decision when the drawing is ambiguous.
