Which CAD Software Should You Actually Learn First?
SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo or Fusion 360? The honest answer depends on the industry you want to work in — not on which package markets itself hardest.
Students starting out in mechanical design often ask which CAD software to learn first. The honest answer depends on the direction you’re headed:
- AutoCAD is still the standard for 2D drafting and general layout work across many Indian manufacturing and fabrication shops — a strong first tool if you want to be immediately useful in a drafting role.
- SolidWorks is the most widely used parametric 3D modelling tool in mechanical product design and manufacturing across Gujarat’s industrial base — worth prioritising if your goal is product design, machine design, or moving into simulation work.
- Fusion 360 is a strong choice for students who want 3D modelling plus basic simulation and CAM in one tool, especially useful for portfolio projects before landing a first role.
In practice, the underlying modelling logic — sketches, constraints, features, assemblies — transfers between tools once you’ve learned one properly. The bigger factor is which software the industry roles you’re targeting actually use; that’s worth checking in job postings for the specific companies or sectors you want to work in.

Match the software to the industry you want to work in
This is the whole answer, and it is more useful than any feature comparison. In Indian manufacturing, SolidWorks dominates machine building and special purpose machinery. AutoCAD remains the standard for 2D layouts, fabrication and anything construction-adjacent. Creo and CATIA are strongest in automotive and aerospace supply chains. Fusion 360 has a foothold in smaller product and prototyping shops.
Look at the job listings for the work you actually want, and count which package appears. That is your answer, and it will be more accurate than any general recommendation — including this one.
What transfers between packages, and what does not
The concepts transfer almost completely. Sketch constraints, feature-based modelling, assembly mates, drawing views, GD&T — these work the same way everywhere. An engineer fluent in one parametric modeller can usually be productive in another within a few weeks.
What does not transfer is muscle memory and the location of things. That feels like a large gap in week one and a small one by week six. It is not a good reason to agonise over the first choice.
Learn drafting, not just modelling
The most common gap we see in new engineers is not modelling ability — plenty can produce a clean 3D part. It is drafting: knowing how to dimension a drawing so a machinist can work from it, where the datums go, which tolerances the process can hold, and what a drawing standard is for.
Modelling is taught well and widely. Drafting is what actually gets you hired, because it is what the shop floor consumes.
Build something complete
One finished assembly with proper drawings is worth more in an interview than a dozen half-finished parts. Model something real, detail every component, produce the drawings and a bill of materials, and be ready to explain why you made each decision.
