Twin-Shaft Gearbox for Plastics Processing

A twin-output gearbox for plastics processing machinery, where both shafts must turn in phase and the housing has to absorb the thrust that extrusion generates.

Two shafts, one drive

The output block carries two closely spaced parallel shafts with internal splines that engage the extruder screws directly. Splines rather than keys matter here: the screws have to come out for cleaning and go back in phase, and a spline repeats that engagement exactly every time. The centre distance between the two bores is the critical dimension of the whole gearbox, which is why the housing is built from bolted split sections — each can be machined accurately and then clamped, rather than trying to hold the tolerance across one large casting.

Handling thrust

Plastics extrusion pushes material forward, and that reaction comes straight back down the screw into the gearbox as axial thrust. The heavy bolt circle on the output snout is sized to clamp a thrust block capable of reacting continuous process pressure into the machine frame rather than into the gear mesh. Sight-glass ports in the side walls let oil level and condition be checked without opening the casing.

Heat

Plastics machinery runs hot, and a gearbox bolted to a heated barrel picks up that heat by conduction. Oil volume and housing surface area were sized with that in mind, since lubricant that thins out in service is a slow way to destroy a gear set.

What was delivered

A twin-output 3D assembly, sectional general arrangement, individual manufacturing drawings, bearing and seal schedule, and a lubrication specification.
