Spiral Bevel Gear Sets & Shafts for a Gear Manufacturer

Gear manufacturers rarely need a whole gearbox designed; they need accurate models and drawings of the gears, shafts and casings their customers order, fast. Over several projects we have modelled spiral bevel sets, splined input shafts and casings for an Ahmedabad gear manufacturer, each to their own tolerance table.

The challenge

Orders arrive as a sample, a sketch or a competitor's drawing, often with the spiral angle, hand and mounting distance to be confirmed. The manufacturer needs models accurate enough to programme their machines and drawings their inspectors can measure against — with spline, runout and hardness callouts their shop already understands.

Our approach

For each set the bevel geometry is established first: tooth count, module, pressure angle, spiral angle and hand, mounting distance and backlash, checked in a bevel gear calculation before any modelling. Right- and left-hand variants are produced from the same parametric model so a mirror-image order is a configuration change.

Shafts are detailed with the spline data, centre details and the controls the manufacturer specifies on every job — 3.2 Ra turning finish, smooth spline finishing, 0.030 mm face runout and 0.050 mm OD runout relative to centres — together with the EN-353 material and case-hardening note.

Casings and bearing arrangements are modelled with the standard bearings the manufacturer stocks (SKF 32307 and 33109 tapers in one casing project), so what is drawn is what is on the shelf. Each job is delivered as native SolidWorks, STEP for the machine programmers and a PDF drawing in the manufacturer's title block.

What was delivered

The manufacturer has a growing library of accurate, re-usable gear and shaft models, turnaround on new orders measured in days, and drawings that go straight to the machine and the inspection bench. Repeat orders in the opposite hand or a different mounting distance are handled as configuration changes.

  • Parametric bevel gear and shaft models (RH/LH configurations)
  • Manufacturing drawings with spline and runout controls
  • Casing and bearing arrangement models
  • STEP exports for CNC programming

Standards and conventions applied

  • ISO 23509 bevel gear geometry principles
  • Customer tolerance table and critical-parameter marking
  • EN-353 material and hardening specification
