Centrifugal Separator Bowl & Spindle Assemblies

A disc-stack separator is a precision machine: a bowl spinning at several thousand rpm on a spindle whose balance and bearing arrangement decide whether it runs smoothly or shakes itself apart. We rebuilt the bowl and spindle assemblies of an industrial separator as editable SolidWorks models from the original 2D drawings and neutral files, so the owner could manufacture spares locally.

The challenge

The separator owner had a mix of supplier PDFs, old Solid Edge drawing exports and a few STEP files for the bowl and spindle, none of which agreed completely. Spares were taking months to arrive. They wanted a single, consistent 3D definition from which drawings could be issued to a local machine shop.

Our approach

Each component — bowl body, bowl hood, distributor, top disc, spindle, bearings and seals — was modelled parametrically in SolidWorks using the supplier drawings as the primary source and the STEP data as a check. Where sources disagreed, the discrepancy was listed on a query sheet and resolved with the client before modelling continued.

The bowl assembly was built around the spindle axis with the disc stack represented as a configured pattern, and the critical fits — bowl-to-spindle taper, bearing seats, seal faces — were toleranced on the drawings with the surface finish and runout the application needs. Material and heat-treatment notes were carried from the original data.

What was delivered

The client received native SolidWorks assemblies for the bowl and spindle, manufacturing drawings for every part and STEP exports, giving them a complete, consistent definition for local spares manufacture.

  • Bowl and spindle assemblies in SolidWorks
  • Manufacturing drawings with fits, runout and surface finish
  • Query sheet reconciling supplier sources
  • STEP exports

Standards and conventions applied

  • ISO GPS tolerancing with runout controls on rotating parts
  • Material and heat-treatment carried from source data
