Pump Motor Canopies for a Process Plant

Small jobs still need to be right. For a process engineering company we designed a family of pump motor canopies — a cooling-tower pump motor canopy and feed/CIP pump motor canopies — as sheet-metal fabrications with mesh guards, delivered with flat patterns and DXFs in the customer's own drawing format.

Parts
Roof sheet, legs, covers, wire-mesh plates and mesh
Outputs
Fabrication drawings, flat-pattern DXFs

The challenge

The canopies protect motors outdoors and must be easy to lift off for maintenance, with mesh sides for ventilation. The customer wanted them drawn in their own title block with their standard notes so the fabricator saw a familiar sheet, and wanted DXFs ready for laser cutting.

Our approach

Each canopy was modelled as a SolidWorks sheet-metal assembly: a folded roof sheet with a 20° pitch, four legs, cover panels and wire-mesh plates with the mesh modelled as a reference part. Flat patterns were generated with the fabricator's bend table, and the drawings — 001-00 and 003-00 series — were issued with an 8-item and 5-item BOM, weights and the customer's standard de-burr and edge-break notes.

What was delivered

Both canopy types were fabricated from the drawings and DXFs without queries; the customer keeps the models to size further canopies for other motor frames.

  • Sheet-metal assemblies in SolidWorks
  • Fabrication drawings with BOM and weights
  • Flat-pattern DXFs
  • STEP export

Standards and conventions applied

  • Customer title block and standard notes
  • ISO 2768 general tolerances
  • Fabricator bend table
