Mattress Lifter: Folding Frame Mechanism

A lifting frame that raises a mattress for access and folds flat when closed, designed for an Australian fabrication client. The mechanism was modelled in both open and closed conditions so the travel, the stopper and the nylon wear strips could be checked before the frame was cut.

The challenge

The frame has to lift smoothly, hold position and fold away without pinch points, using sections and fittings the fabricator stocks. Two configurations — open and closed — had to be shown on the drawing so the shop could verify travel on the bench.

Our approach

The lifter was built as a SolidWorks assembly with the pivots mated so that the frame moves through its full travel; open and closed configurations were captured for the drawing. Nylon wear strips were specified where the frame slides, and a stopper was positioned to locate the mattress in the raised position. The two-sheet drawing carries both conditions, the fabrication tolerance table and the parts list.

What was delivered

Released as a two-sheet fabrication drawing set with STEP files of both conditions; the fabricator built the first unit from the drawings.

  • SolidWorks assembly with open/closed configurations
  • Two-sheet fabrication drawing set
  • STEP exports of both conditions

Standards and conventions applied

  • AS 1100 drawing conventions
  • Client fabrication tolerance table
