Large Helical Gear & Pinion Models for Hobbing

When a gear is large and the steel is expensive, nobody wants to find out at the hobbing machine that the helix hand was wrong. For an alloy-steel gear manufacturer we modelled a series of large helical gears and pinions directly from gear data, checked the pairs in KISSsoft and issued drawings with complete data tables.

The challenge

The manufacturer receives gear orders from OEMs as data sheets or worn samples. They needed 3D models with true involute helical tooth geometry — not approximated — so that their CNC programmers, inspection department and customers all referred to one definition, and they needed it quickly enough to quote.

Our approach

Each gear was defined in KISSsoft from the supplied data: module, tooth count, helix angle and hand, pressure angle, profile shift and face width. Where a mating gear was known, the pair was rated for contact and bending safety and the centre distance was verified before the model was built.

The tooth form was generated from the calculated geometry, with the bore, keyway, web and rim modelled to the customer's drawing practice. LH and RH versions were produced as configurations. Drawings carry the full gear data table — including measurement over pins and span measurement — so the inspector can check the cut gear without recalculating anything.

What was delivered

Models and drawings for each order were delivered within days, as STEP for programming and PDF for the shop. A related job for another gear works provided KISSsoft reports for three helical pairs (2–3.5 module, 22–30T pinions against 76–88T wheels) used as the engineering basis for a gearbox refurbishment quote.

  • Helical gear and pinion models with true tooth geometry
  • Drawings with full gear data and inspection dimensions
  • KISSsoft geometry and rating reports
  • STEP files for CNC programming

Standards and conventions applied

  • ISO 6336 rating via KISSsoft
  • DIN 3960/3962 gear data presentation
  • Customer drawing template
