The challenge
A trailer imposes constraints a skid does not: axle loads and tow-ball weight, a chassis that must take road loads as well as the pump and engine, and a hood that must be removable for service yet survive towing. The client wanted the extra fuel capacity that the tandem-axle rating allows, without exceeding 3.5-tonne towing.
Our approach
The structural concept was developed first: a chassis in standard sections with the UB portal carrying the lifting loads, RHS hood posts and an engine/pump mounting arrangement positioned to bring the centre of gravity over the tandem axle group while keeping tow-ball load in range. A GA concept was issued for comment before detailing began.
The approved concept was then built as a fully mated SolidWorks assembly — chassis weldment, axles and coupling as supplier models, engine and pump reference models, sheet-metal hood and guards with flat patterns — with mates set so that the hood opening and guard removal could be demonstrated in the model.
The drawing set was taken through four revisions with the client, each tracked in the revision table and reissued as a complete set with STEP data.
What was delivered
The R4 drawing set and assembly were delivered as native SolidWorks and STEP. Because the HD4K reused the sub-assembly structure of the HD6K skid, common parts carry the same numbers across both products.
