Automated Scraping Machine with Pneumatic Gripper

For a control-and-automation integrator we designed the mechanical side of two automation cells: a scraping machine whose head is driven along a rack by a geared motor, and a pneumatic gripper built around catalogue cylinders. The integrator supplied the controls; we supplied everything that moves.

The challenge

Integrators are strong on PLCs, sensors and panels and often need a mechanical partner for the frame, drive and tooling. The scraping machine needed a stiff frame, a linear drive that could be positioned by the integrator's servo logic, and a scraping head that could be changed without tools. The gripper had to use standard cylinders so spares were a phone call away.

Our approach

The scraping machine frame was designed as a welded section frame with a machined rail surface, the head carried on linear guides and driven by an 8-tooth pinion on a rack from an IE2 geared motor selected from the supplier catalogue. Catalogue models of the motor, bearings and guides were placed in the assembly so clearances were checked against real geometry.

The gripper was designed around ISO-standard pneumatic cylinders with machined jaws, a mounting plate matched to the integrator's actuator and sensor brackets on the slots the integrator specified. Both assemblies were drawn with plate DXFs for laser cutting, machining drawings for the heads and jaws, and assembly drawings with BOMs listing the catalogue parts by supplier part number.

What was delivered

Both cells were built from the drawing packages. The integrator reused the gripper design on a later cell with a different jaw profile, which was issued as a configuration of the same assembly.
