Carton Folding Machine

A carton folding machine designed around the folding sequence itself: how board moves, where it is creased, and how it is held while the fold is made.

The sequence sets the machine

A folding machine is really a sequence of operations that happen to be arranged in a line. Getting the sequence right — where the board is creased, where it is folded, where it is held while glue sets — determines the machine layout. We worked the sequence out first and let the mechanical design follow it.

Handling board gently

Carton board marks easily and jams if it is not guided. Guide rails, transfer points and the gaps between stations were detailed to keep the board supported through the whole path, with no unsupported spans where a sheet can buckle or a leading edge can catch.

Adjustability for different carton sizes

A folding machine that only runs one carton size has limited value. Adjustment was designed into the guide and station positions so a size change is a setup operation rather than a rebuild.

What was delivered

A full machine assembly, fabrication and machining drawings, drive and conveyor layout, and a bill of materials.
