Hydraulic Press With Automatic Feeder

A custom hydraulic press with an integrated feeder, where the press frame and the feed mechanism were designed together so the two stay in time.

Press and feeder as one machine

A press and a feeder bought separately have to be made to cooperate. Designing them together means the feed stroke, the press stroke and the clearance between them are decided once, as a system, rather than reconciled on site.

The frame

Press frames deflect under load, and that deflection opens the gap between the tool halves. The frame was designed with section sizes chosen to keep deflection within what the tooling could tolerate, since a press that flexes produces inconsistent parts regardless of how well the tool is made.

Feed timing and safety

The feeder has to advance material, stop clear of the tool, and hold position while the ram descends. The mechanism and its stroke were modelled against the ram cycle so the material is stationary and the feed fingers are clear of the die at the moment of the press stroke.

What was delivered

A complete press and feeder assembly, frame fabrication drawings, cylinder and feeder mounting details, and a bill of materials covering the hydraulic and bought-out components.
