Engineers often ask us for “a simulation” without specifying which kind — and the two most common types, FEA and CFD, answer very different questions.
FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tells you how a solid structure behaves under load: where it bends, where it’s overstressed, whether it survives fatigue cycling, how it responds to heat-driven expansion. If your question is “will this part break, deform, or wear out,” you need FEA.
CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) tells you how a fluid or gas moves through or around your design: pressure drop through a duct, cooling airflow over electronics, drag on a housing. If your question involves flow, pressure, or heat carried by a moving fluid, you need CFD.
Some projects need both — a heat exchanger, for instance, needs CFD to model flow and heat transfer, then FEA to check the housing survives thermal stress. The right first step is describing the failure mode or performance question you’re worried about; from there, the correct simulation type — and the load cases worth testing — becomes obvious.
