How to Choose a CAD Outsourcing Partner (Without Getting Burned)

Outsourcing CAD work is now a standard way for manufacturers to handle overflow, specialised simulation work, or projects that don’t justify a full-time hire. But the difference between a good and bad outsourcing experience usually comes down to a few things buyers forget to check:

  • Do they review for manufacturability, or just draft what’s given? A drafting vendor that flags interference or tolerance problems before delivery is worth more than one that models exactly what’s on the sketch, errors included.
  • What’s their revision process? Ask how many revision rounds are included and what happens beyond that — vague answers here predict billing surprises later.
  • Can they show relevant past work? Not every vendor can share client files, but they should be able to describe comparable projects — part type, industry, complexity — in specific terms.
  • Will you have a named point of contact, or a ticket queue? For anything beyond a single one-off drawing, a named engineer who understands your product context saves enormous back-and-forth compared to submitting a new “ticket” every time.
  • Do they sign an NDA as standard practice? If confidentiality is treated as a special request rather than the default, that’s worth noticing.

A good outsourcing partner behaves like an extension of your design team, not a file-conversion service — the difference shows up in how many review cycles a project needs before it’s actually usable.
